I had the exact same experience when I got off instagram a few years ago and it was humbling. However, being on the other side I would just assume I'm just at the mercy of the sporadic algorithm and it's not showing me certain content. It would take me a while to notice I hadn't seen someone because I'm just so used to being spoon fed whatever makes the machine the most money. However, I do just want to say that if you were off IG for good I would definitely miss you. I love your content, your voice, your sense of humor, and your aesthetic (which is why I'm also here following you on substack!).
I feel this. So well written. No fluff, just real relatable thought. I also write and teach without much feedback, but I try bring it back to what I’ve gained by collecting my thoughts in pictures, words and videos. I benefit and grow from it, even if no one sees it, or takes a second to comment or like it. It still matters. lol. Look at me proving the point, making your thing about me!
I think you go above and beyond on your insta videos. They are funny and artistic. But I think people also follow a shit ton of people and they also are in surfer doom and new discovery mode. It’s not very intimate there. I think of canceling it all together because they make it hard to now to be found as new artist. Thank you for blunt and honest vulnerability in this social media tumble weed shit storm.
Social media is no replacement for real life and meeting real people and for getting real feedback. Just avoid opinions of family and friends who tell you you're an undiscovered genius.
Actually even in the real world you are quickly forgotten. I had an accident that kept me out of circulation, most people didn't notice my absence, even people I thought relied on me. They quickly found someone else. It put me in my place! lol!
My account got hacked like 1-1/2 years ago. Some random person started to post weird things and send awkward messages to my followers. They found me and reported the abuse of my profile and after I have been able to take over again I was deeply moved by how many told me how much they’ve missed me and how they immediately knew this other posts could never be me. I blush saying I do have an amazing audience and they do care. Blessed
It is not because no one cares, or does not love, admire, and appreciate your work. It is because they didn't have the opportunity to KNOW they cared. Because that would require an algorithm to tell them you were not posting that day, and suggest that they comment or express concern. And being concerned about what you are doing is anathema to the platform itself. It is designed for one have the opportunity to care only about oneself.
I can very much relate to this and I love the questions you posed at the end. I want to hear your answers 🤔, but more importantly I want to answer these questions myself. Thanks for the homework, and thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Daren, I just gotta also add, most people assume the algorithm has changed if we don't see our favorite people. We assume you're still active, but just aren't seeing you by default :) but of course, thank you for dissecting the ego's part in all of this as well. Underlying motivation is the most interesting aspect to human behavior, in my opinion. Refreshing as always.

I don’t even know you (personally)… is it weird that I’m… well, proud of you?
Enjoy your journey!

But you do bring me joy . Please keep posting ❤️
Ugh oh bud yes.
I agree with other people about the algorithm thingy, I would definitely notice your absence. Love your art and sense of humor. Carry on please.
I was just leaving a note out there on Substack last night after feeling the sorry
